How Many Soldiers Died in Each U.S. War? | KQED
The U.S. death toll, according to Johns Hopkins
University, stood at 600,012 on Tuesday afternoon.
Many Americans have shown a reluctance to get vaccinated, with just over half of U.S. adults fully immunized.
In parts of the Midwest and South, in
particular, vaccine rates per 100,000 people still remain relatively low
compared with the Northeast and parts of the West Coast, according to data from
the U.S.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The divide has been
particularly marked between
rural and urban areas of the country.
More than 600,000 deaths have been reported in the United States from COVID-19, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University, marking a grim milestone even as a nationwide push for vaccinations appears to have curbed the worst of the pandemic's toll among Americans.
And the once-plummeting rate of new U.S. deaths from COVID-19 also appears to have slowed in recent weeks, as cases continue to spread mostly among non-vaccinated people.
The
current seven-day average of about 430 deaths a day is less than one-seventh of
the 3,300 daily fatalities during the ghastly January peak.

McConnell haunts Democrats with new
pledge to block Biden court nominee
Analysis by Stephen Collinson, CNN

Mitch McConnell just did
it again.
The Senate minority leader, whose
dubious maneuvering to turn the Supreme Court to the far right still haunts
liberals, just previewed a fresh scheme to bolster conservative judicial
supremacy on the nation's top bench for years to come, with widespread
consequences for all three branches of government.
The Republican veteran indicated
Monday he would implement his self-declared rule and refuse
to confirm a Supreme Court nominee picked
by President
Joe Biden in election year 2024 if the GOP
wins the Senate next year.
"I think it's highly
unlikely," McConnell said when asked on Hugh Hewitt's conservative radio
show if Biden would get a pick. In fact, the Kentucky power player didn't even
guarantee he would allow the confirmation of a Biden nominee in 2023 either.
